San Clemente Tsunami Warning 2010

Today at Noon a Tsunami may hit the San Clemente Coast, Please Seek Higher Ground!

The following list gives estimated times of arrival for
locations along the North American Pacific coast from a
tsunami generated at the given source location. The
list is ordered by arrival time starting with the earliest.
Since tsunami speed is directly related to
water depth, tsunami ETAs can be computed independent of
tsunami amplitude. THE LISTING OF A TSUNAMI ARRIVAL TIME
BELOW DOES NOT INDICATE A WAVE IS IMMINENT.
The listed arrival
time is the initial wave arrival. Tsunamis can be dangerous
for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not
necessarily the largest.

Thank You StumbleUpon

"You'll never meet anyone if you don't leave your house," is what my friends said. And not that I would recommend staying in and Stumbling to find love, but it sure worked out for us.

I would have to credit my "Borrow A Boyfriend," Mr. Jeff Daly. A "Borrow A Boyfriend" is when your friends let their boyfriend come and help you with all that guy stuff. Computers, mechanical issues, getting a view into the mind of the testosterone laden gender, that kind of thing.

Jeff was especially gifted in the computer department and would insure I had the premium internet connection and the latest Beta Invites. After a tech stop Jeff had installed that StumbleUpon button in my browser and I was so immediately hooked on it that it became our inside joke. "Come out tonight Lisa you just can't stay home and Stumble." And when citing some new piece of information both Jeff and I would smirk and say "Oh I just Stumbled Upon it." And so when I told Jeff that I had met this guy on StumbleUpon he said "What?"

I had returned from teaching a Braille Class up on the Ventura County Community College campus to find a message in my inbox from NeonSurfer. I had seen that icon over and over. That big eyeball and unkempt brow. I had been to his page. And now he sent me a message! My heart started to race and I paced around my one bedroom cottage.

He asked if I was into Science Fiction. I said I love Star Trek. He asked if I surfed. I questioned "in the water ... with a board? Nobody actually surfs?"

He asked if I was into computers? I said I was into dots. He asked "Can you be more vague?" I thought, "Wow, can you be more condescending?" (And yes he can be btw.) And then I explained my name Dot-Girl. I was a Braille Transcriber. He was NeonSurfer, a neon tube bender turned wonk.

We spent about 6 months sharing links on StumbleUpon before we ever met. Our relationship escalated from our StumbleUpon avatars to email and then I allowed him to IM me. Thought it might have been a mistake at the time because man that guy can share links and keep 'em coming.

StumbleUpon gave us this chance to share who we were and what was important to us. That has grown to a way of life and our very business. We treasure the friends and connections that we find via these new conversational tools.

We keep running into people like us. The synchronicity and adventure grows. To be with someone with whom you share so much has been in indescribable gift and to be with someone who likes to explore and learn has given me the life I once only dreamed of.

Thank You StumbleUpon!

XOXO

Public Forums, Twitter Streams and Representation

From Public Forums, Twitter Streams and Representation

At 3 pm Monday afternoon Darin and I met with Ted Nguyen and Ryan Maloney of the OCTA to discuss the projected Tweet stream, sources for Twitter questions and the source of the YouTube video questions shared at the public forum.

Projected Twitter Stream
My first concern was why were my Tweets not displayed on the projected Twitter screen in the forum. Nguyen and Maloney concluded that I was not in the Twitter search database. A search for my name, which is my Twitter ID, @LisaMcClure did not show up. Maloney showed how ParaTweet was used to project the Tweets. The Twitter API apparently could not pull my name up because I was not in the Twitter Search DataBase. The same was true of @Surfrider and Nguyen had discovered another individual involved in the forum with the same issue.

Origin of Twitter Questions
While we were not provided with the actual urls of the Twitter questions Maloney and Nguyen explained the process. Interns monitored the Twitter Stream, but not the Twitter stream projected on the wall in the forum. There was a time lag between the question being posted and the question being posed. There is also the possibility that the Tweet may not have made it to the projected Twitter stream in the forum.

Origin of YouTube Questions
The YouTube videos were actually shot by a Chapman University student. The call for YouTube questions went out and when there was no response students were asked to do some video interviews. These interviews are posted at the OCTA YouTube channel found at http://www.youtube.com/goOCTA

Here are the videos.

A Start on Some Suggested Guidelines
As tools of conversational media become more and more prominent features in public dialog we must all be aware of transparency issues and potential manipulation. This is my list of how I think a public form can take steps to ensure a democratic and representative process. I would like to invite more people to build on this list as we all have different experiences with the issues and technologies involved.
1. ParaTweet and other Projecting Software must be thoroughly tested.

2. If you have invited guests or representatives I suggest running their names through your software to insure their participation. If they do not appear you will know beforehand and either try to correct the issue or represent yourself under another account for the event. (a discovery!)

3. If there is going to be monitoring of a stream for a public forum make a clear list of qualifications for a Tweet to be excluded. This list should be publicly posted and possibly tweeted within the stream as a reminder from the moderator. I think this is really import for public forums intended to share voices, ask questions and hold public officials accountable as well as to allow for conversation.

4. The moderator of the stream should be announced along with the list of what could get you excluded and to provide a point of accountability. This is free speech and nothing to trifle with.

4. Asking for YouTube participation is great. But if your call gets no response I think it is better to say no one responded or be very clear about citing your source for clarity sake.

5. When calls for responses from video or prepared media from the public go out we want to somehow insure that those calls go out widely and in time for many different people to respond. And when those videos are used we want to see the links, the urls should be displayed.

Our Gratitute To Ted Nguyen and Ryan Maloney for sincerely taking time to discuss our concerns of Friday the Monday immediately following the event, as well as their pioneering work in the realm of conversational media. Changing how things are done isn't easy.

Using Twitter as a Forum for a hearing on transportation issues is a great solution. A larger amount of people can participate without traffic concerns, parking or other limitations. Not everyone can participate in a weekday event from 8 am to 7 pm, but we can certainly check our Twitter streams.

We want to ensure that engagement is democratic. We must be sure to include everyones voice and to invite more and more to join in the conversation.

Transparency and Open Government

Forum from Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary

3.
a. used to mean a public meeting, a lecture involving audience discussion
b. a program (as on radio or television) involving discussion of a problem usually by several authorities

The Southern California Transit Forum was held Friday, February 5, 2010 an all day affair live streamed from Chapman University in Orange. The topic "Seeking Solutions To Address The State Transit Crisis."

For Transit Forum Update Click Here

We were invited to participate in the forum, to Tweet out to our followers information on the event and invite them to join in the conversation.

I was invited to a forum.
I was invited to be part of an audience and was asked use a #hashtag.
I was asked to have my followers join the conversation by using the same #hashtag.
But I wasn't represented.
My Tweets didn't show up in the Forum.
To me this was not a Transparent Forum

What is Transparent?

If you are going to use a #Hashtag ... then don't filter it at the forum, especially don't filter invited representatives from Social Media.

#Hashtags are an online convention that everyone might not be familiar with. At conferences and events when Twitter Streams are projected onto the screen by hashtags it is the audience being allowed to participate and share in the event without interrupting the event.

Hashtags can be abused and it is not unusual for Tweets to be monitored. Threats, foul language and inappropriate items are often siphoned off. But when it goes any farther in this it starts to look like censorship at worse and manipulation at best. Neither would be described as "Transparent."

From my observations the Twitter stream shown in the Forum and the one online differed tremendously and profoundly. New posts were streaming into Twitter while the stream within the Forum repeated and looped the same Tweets.

Audience Participation

If you are going to take questions from YouTube.com I want to see where they are posted? Where are these questions you are drawing from? I want the urls. I want to see it FROM YOUTUBE.COM.

Twitter, same thing, if you are taking questions from the Twitter stream I want to see where they are coming from. What are the questions from your constituents? I want the urls. I want to see it FROM TWITTER.COM.

SHOW ME YOUR TRANSPARENCY
Show me your Transparency. Show me it's not a plant. Show me I am being represented in this media and not just getting "Transparency-Washed" like "Green-Washing" when public places set out recycling receptacles just to dump it all in the same bin behind closed doors.

All that is required:
1. url of the YouTube Video
2. url of the Twitter question

Why?
Because its important. This is OUR Forum. Our chance to be heard. This is my chance to tell Sacramento I don't like how they spend my money.

In the afternoon I heard the moderator shut down the questions from participants.

Think I am whining now?

What I Want the Transit Forum to Hear

From What I Want the Transit Forum to Hear

I have used public transportation in both the Los Angeles Metro area and the Orange County Metro area. As a young adult I had health issues, they thought I had epilepsy and so I did not qualify for a drivers license. I have experienced the limitations of not having a car in Southern California. To make a trip from North Hollywood to Glendale to get an immunization took all day on public transportation. It actually would have been quicker for me to go to San Fransisco that day.

I argue that the need for local, immediate transportation is what will serve the constituents of California. I say that cutting the local bus services is a huge disservice. No, cutting local bus services is blatantly ignoring the needs of the public good and the demands of the future.

Gas prices are soaring with the promise to soar more. Job cuts, unemployment levels ... probably the car is going to go as well for a lot of these people. And then what is the biggest obstacle for their job hunt, their economic recovery? You think looking at wants ads in the newspaper is discouraging ... try cross checking with an available metro route, a metro route you can depend on to meet your work schedule.

Demographically speaking we have a huge generation of aging Baby Boomers. When adults are faced with the onset of legal blindness transportation issues loom even greater than literacy! How will I get around? How do I maintain my independence? How do I take care of myself?

The local transit system is the life and blood for many people to get basic needs cared for, to find work, to go to school, to get their children to the doctors.

Why are we cutting back on local buses and neighborhood solutions?

I don't need to get from Anaheim to LA in 20 Minutes. I need to get to work, to school, to the grocery store, to the doctors office. These are the transportation issues that need to be addressed. This is the infrastructure that people need. This is the solution we want.

If You Say You Are Transparent You Better Be Transparent

Rendering authenticity is the value to which businesses will be held.

In Joseph Pine's Ted Talk he shares the 3 rules business must follow in order to render the value of authenticity. Below I have rewritten Pine's rules and replaced the value of authenticity with transparency. I would argue the same three rules apply if you choose to market your online presence as "transparent." Make sure you take a good long look in the mirror before you make that declaration.

1. Don't say you are transparent unless you really are transparent.

2. It's easier to be transparent if you don't say you are transparent.

3. If you say you are transparent ... you better be transparent.

If you say you are transparent and you are not you run the risk of appearing as a phony. Some may need a refresher in the wiki definition of transparency.

Happy Birthday Rosa Parks

Happy Birthday Rosa Parks, and to everyone else who is not content with sitting in the back of the bus...

Are you ready for change?

Don McLean American Pie

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
And, I knew if I had my chance that I could make those people dance, and...
Maybe they'd be happy for a while
But, February made me shiver with every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep - I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride
Something touched me deep inside the day the music died

So, bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinking whiskey and rye, singing...
This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Did you write the Book of Love and do you have faith in God, above?
If the Bible tells you so
Now, do you believe in Rock and Roll? Can music save your mortal soul? And...
Can you teach me how to dance real slow?
Well, I know that you're in love with him, 'cause I saw you dancing in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes - man, I dig those rhythm and blues
I was a lonely, teenage broncin' buck with a pink carnation and a pickup truck, but...
I knew I was out of luck the day the music died

I started singing, bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinking whiskey and rye, singing...
This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Now, for ten years we've been on our own and moss grows fat on a Rolling Stone, but...
That's not how it used to be
When the Jester sang for the king and queen in a coat he borrowed from James Dean
In a voice that came from you and me
Oh, and while the King was looking down the Jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned - no verdict was returned
And, while Lennon read a book on Marx the quartet practiced in the park, and...
We sang dirges in the dark the day the music died

We were singing, bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinking whiskey and rye, singing...
This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Healter Skealter in the summer swelter - the Birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight Miles High and falling fast
It landed foul on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass with the Jester on the sidelines in a cast
Now, the halftime air was sweet perfume while the Sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance, oh, but we never got the chance
'cause the players tried to take the field - the marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed the day the music died?

We started singing, bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinking whiskey and rye, singing...
This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

And, there we were, all in one place - a generation Lost in Space
With no time left to start again
So, come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick - Jack Flash sat on a Candlestick, 'cause...
Fire is the Devil's only friend
And, as I watched him on the stage my hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in Hell could break that satan's spell
And, as the flames climbed high into the night to light the sacrificial rite, I saw...
Satan laughing with delight the day the music died

He was singing, bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinking whiskey and rye, singing...
This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

I met a girl who sang the Blues, and I asked her for some happy news
She just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store where I'd heard the music years before, but...
The man there said the music wouldn't play
And, in the streets the children screamed, the lover's cried, and the poets dreamed, but...
Not a word was spoken - the church bells all were broken
And, the three men I admire most: the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost, they...
Caught the last train for the coast the day the music died

And, they were singing, bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinking whiskey and rye, singing...
This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

They were singing, bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinking whiskey and rye, singing...
This'll be the day that I die

(what does it all mean? )

Difficult preaching is posdnuos' pleasure
Pleasure and preaching starts in the heart
Something that stimulates the music in my measure
Measure in my music, raised in three parts
Casually see but don't do like the soul
'cause seein' and doin' are actions for monkeys
Doin' hip hop hustle, no rock and roll
Unless your name's brewster, 'cause brewster's a punky
Parents let go 'cause there's magic in the air
Criticising rap shows you're out of order
Stop look and listen to the phrasin' fred astaires
And don't get offended while mase do-se-do's your daughter
A tri-camera rolls since our music's now set
Fly rhymes are stored on a d.a.i.s.y. production
It stands for "da inner sound y'all" and y'all can bet
That the action's not a trick, but showing the function

Everybody wants to be a deejay
Everybody wants to be an emcee
But being speakers are the best
And you don't have to guess
De la soul posse consists of three
And that's the magic number

Dove:
This here piece of the pie
Is not dessert but the course that we dine
And three out of every darn time
The effect is "mmmm" when a daisy grows in your mind
Showing true position, this here piece is
Kissin' the part of the pie that's missin'
When that negative number fills up the casualty
Maybe you can subtract it
You can call it your lucky partner
Maybe you can call it your adjective
But odd as it may be
Without my 1 and 2 where would there be
My 3
Mase pos and me
And that's the magic number

Focus is formed by flaunts to the soul
Souls who flaunt styles gain praises by pounds
Common are speakers who are never scrolls
Scrolls written daily creates a new sound
Listeners listen 'cause this here is wisdom
Wisdom of a speaker, a dove and a plug
Set aside a legal substance to feed 'em
For now get 'em high off this dialect drug
Time is a factor so it's time to count
Count not the negative actions of one
Speakers of soul say it's time to shout
Three forms the soul to a positive sum
Dance to this fix and flex every muscle
Space can be filled if you rise like my lumber
Advance to the tune but don't do the hustle
Shake, rattle, roll to my magic number

Now you may try to subtract it
But it just won't go away
Three times one?
(what is it? )
(one, two, three!)
And that's the magic number

(yo, what's up? )
(1, 2, 3)
(I say, children, what does it all mean? )
(woah-woah-wo, 1, 2, 3)
(I wouldn't lie to you)
(no more no less, that's the magic number)
(no more no less)
(what it is? )
(no more no less)
(is this the future? )
(no more no less)
(do the shang-a-lang)
(no more no less)
(no one on the subway ever chats to me)
(no more no less)
(anybody in the audience ever get hit by a car? )
(no more no less)
(how high's the water, mama? )
(no more no less)
(how high's the water, mama? )
(no more no less)
(three feet high and rising)
(no more no less)
(three)
(that's the magic number)

S is for Sunrise

I wake up in the morning and I consciously create my day the way I want it to happen. Now sometimes, because my mind is examining all the things that I need to get done, it takes me a little bit to settle down and get to the point of where I'm actually intentionally creating my day. But here's the thing: When I create my day and out of nowhere little things happen that are so unexplainable, I know that they are the process or the result of my creation. And the more I do that, the more I build a neural net in my brain that I accept that that's possible. This gives me the power and the incentive to do it the next day.

So if we're consciously designing our destiny, and if we're consciously from a spiritual standpoint throwing in with the idea that our thoughts can affect our reality or affect our life -- because reality equals life -- then I have this little pact that I have when I create my day. I say, 'I'm taking this time to create my day and I'm infecting the quantum field. Now if (it) is in fact the observer's watching me the whole time that I'm doing this and there is a spiritual aspect to myself, then show me a sign today that you paid attention to any one of these things that I created, and bring them in a way that I won't expect, so I'm as surprised at my ability to be able to experience these things. And make it so that I have no doubt that it's come from you,' and so I live my life, in a sense, all day long thinking about being a genius or thinking about being the glory and the power of God or thinking about being unconditional love.

I'll use living as a genius, for example. And as I do that during parts of the day, I'll have thoughts that are so amazing, that cause a chill in my physical body, that have come from nowhere. But then I remember that that thought has an associated energy that's produced an effect in my physical body. Now that's a subjective experience, but the truth is is that I don't think that unless I was creating my day to have unlimited thought, that that thought would come. -Dr. Joe Dispenza

And the winners will always keep all of their promises.
And around the world we'll learn each other's languages
And the very first thing we'll learn is how to listen.

"Who knows the word for 'hello' in some other language?"

But God gave us brains He meant us to use 'em

B is for Blogger

Blog this Blog that, WTF is a blog anyway? A Blog is a Content Management System.

@Blogger was started by a guy named @EV he left there and started @Twitter

@Ev built @Blogger so anyone could share content on the interwebs, without having to know much about the CMS, and and in doing so, pushed that CMS off your local web server and onto the burgeoning cloud... ( Wordpress users please go do your important security updates now )

Prior to sites like @Blogger, you would need multiple programs to create a webpage, I started with notepad, Fetch, and Netscape Navigator .09b ( rem the one that still had the mosaic logo at start up??) On My first call to the ISP ( anyone rem DELTANET? dial up 14.4 baby! ) and asked for help the tech on the other end politely gave me the info I needed, and then told me if I did not know how to use that info, it was not his job to teach me. Good thing I had a book... (13+ years of Tech support and I now feel his pain.)

So in 2003 the @TheTollRoads decieds that it is going to pave over our state park.

Cue @SierraClub and @Surfrider who with a small team of dedicated supporters were able to stop this bad idea in its tracks with the help of this new CONVERSATIONAL space.

Now it's 2010 @Blogging has splintered off into Photo blogging video blogging micro blogging audio blogging...

And we able to do it all from our iPhone.

And so will you.

Dreidel Dreidel Dreidel - Mele Kalikimaka

I have a little dreidel. I made it out of clay.
When it's dry and ready, then dreidel I shall play.
Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay.
Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, then dreidel I shall play.
It has a lovely body, with legs so short and thin.
When it gets all tired, it drops and then I win!
Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, with leg so short and thin.

My dreidel's always playful. It loves to dance and spin.

UPDATE

The surfing Santa
I was just curious to know whether you got it from Dan King who was awarded the coveted surfing santa at a Guidopalooza years ago under the stipulation he would return with it or return it to me the following year. We lost track of Dan and the Santa after that and have never gotten a satisfactory reason why he never returned it. The one in the pic looks suspiciously like the original (attached pic) If it is the one and same I was wondering if you'd be agreeable to sending him home. Thanks NeoN.

Surfwise

Like many American outsider-adventurers, Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz set out to realize a utopian dream. Abandoning a successful medical practice, he sought self-fulfillment by taking up the nomadic life of a surfer. But unlike other American searchers like Thoreau or Kerouac, Paskowitz took his wife and nine children along for the ride, all eleven of them living in a 24 foot camper. Together, they lived a life that would be unfathomable to most, but enviable to anyone who ever relinquished their dreams to a straight job. The Paskowitz Family proved that America may be running out of frontiers, but it hasn't run out of frontiersman.

Marshall McLuhan On Connecting

We have laid out our own electric networks on a global scale by cable, by telegraph, by radio, by all sorts of electric means.

These circuits are loaded with data that move instantly and which have become indispensable to all decision makers in business, in education, and in politics.

These circuits have a peculiar character not just of connecting us with one another but of involving us with one another.

It is because of the speed. With circuitry the feedback occurs at the same moment the event occurs. - Marshall McLuhan

The Quality of Listening by Jack Kornfield

In Africa. There is a story that illustrates the quality of listening that can come through meditation. In a particular east african tribe or village. When a child is born they don't count the birthday of that child from the day the child comes from its mothers body or even the day it is conceived as in certain other cultures, but rather from when that child was first a thought in its mothers mind, that is the real birthday. And as soon as the mother realizes that she would like to have a child with this particular partner, She will go off and sit out in a field under a tree, and listen, and wait until she can hear the song of the child that wants to be born in her heart that will come from the wedding or the coming together with this particular man. And when she hears this song, she sings it to herself, and then returns back to the village and teaches it to her partner so that when they make love together, joined together in love, They sing this song and invite this child to be born. And later as She is pregnant. She sings the song to the child in the womb and teachers it to midwives so that when the child is born. The first song or sound that it hears is those gathered around singing its own unique song. And as the child grows. The people of the village learn the song of this person so that when he falls or she falls and hurts herself. someone picts her up and sings her song to her, or in the rites of passage or rituals of the village the song is sung, the wedding ceremony where both songs are sung until finally even at the end of life, the song of this child now as an old man or women. is sung for the last time, and say their last words...

When I first heard the story in it touched in me a longing to live in a place where we heard one another's songs, where we were so in tune with ourselves and with one another that we could greet each other in that way, to meditate allows us to hear the song within ourself and to be respectful and hear the song of those around us. - Jack Kornfield

Do you know your song? Can you hear the song of others? Take the time to listen.
