What is Authentic? What is Punk Rock? What happens when you give your 8 year old a FlipHD? I think someone may be watching too much iCarly.
Rendering Authenticity is the New Measure of Value
If rendering authenticity is the new economic offering then conversational media is the tool of choice.
"What happens when you customize a service? What happens when you design a service that is so appropriate for a particular person, that it's exactly what they need at this moment in time? Then you can't help but make them go wow! You can't help but turn that into a memorable event. You can't help but turn that into an experience!"
Companies and small businesses who properly employ the tools of conversational media have opportunities every day to WOW customers and potential customers. Having your social media tools set up to find your clients exactly when they need you is an experience you can offer if you use your tools well. When was the last time your web presence made someone go "WOW!"?
So if experiences are becoming the predominate economic offering and customers are evaluating you on your authenticity the question clearly becomes "How do I render authenticity?"
And it boils down to two things.
1. Know who you are as a business. Be true to yourself.
2. Be who you say you are. Be true to others.
Provide places for people to experience who you are.
And that will make your customers happy and help your business grow.

On this Labor Day, I want to share an email I remember reading a long time ago & it went something like this, ( embellished by my mind & my musings )

Do YOU know the difference between a TOOL and an APPLIANCE?
An APPLIANCE is an item that you USE, and then TOSS when then next B.B.D. (BIGGER BETTER DEAL) comes along. A TOOL is something that you SHARPEN.
A TOOL presupposes understanding & skill in using that TOOL Safely & Correctly
An APPLIANCE should only get you in trouble if you JUMP INTO THE BATHTUB WITH YOUR TOASTER for example!!!
With an APPLIANCE you do not have to worry about your fridge, and the possibility of it banding up with all the refrigerators in your neighborhood in a zombie attack on the White Houses freezer.
With an APPICANCE you do not have to worry that IF YOU DON'T STAY ON TOP OF YOUR UPDATES, your MICROWAVE will be sending all your personal credit card data to a skript kiddy somewhere deep in the Ukraine.
Most times an APPLIANCE is not needed for your life, but a good TOOL may last A LIFE TIME.
An APPLIANCE can be shared amongst friends, but when was the last time you loaned a TOOL and got it back? Especially when you go looking for that TOOL to get you out of a tough situation.
An APPLIANCE is not dependent on the skill set of the user for functionality, put a beer in the icebox, it gets cold...
So then, A TOOL is wholly depend on the skill set of the user. and what functionality will be ultimately be derived from that tool...
I think you can tell alot about a person by the tools they choose, and of those tools, those that they use well.
All TOOLs are not dependent on their complexity, on the contrary,

In the immortal words of one of my favorite tools, Kieth Richards

Everything I need to know I learned from Backgammon

Backgammon is a board game for two players in which the playing pieces are moved according to the roll of dice. The history of Backgammon goes back approximately 5,000 years.
And while there is luck involved, there is also a degree of skill.
My father taught me how to play "gammon" as he calls it, around the pool when I was about Ella's age. His first rule? You are not playing a game, you are playing an "opponent" and you should be aware before the pieces are placed and the first die is thrown, what your strategy will for playing that person.
Thanks Dad, your advice has served me well as a life lesson.

Summer Camp for Surfers
Summer is coming to a close and so is summer camp. This time of year always makes me a bit sentimental. Above is video taken from Summer Soul Surf Camp at San Onofre State Beach. Kids from all over the world come to San Onofre and surf, many for the first time. It was an exciting year for waves and I know there are a couple little girls out there who rode waves of a lifetime this summer.
It was really fun to hear Josh recount the two little girls who were just charging down waves for the first time in their lives. He said the surf was pretty big that day. Their parents looked on from the beach. Josh and the other instructors at Summer Soul Surf Camp in the water as a team covering each young surfer.
Out in the water the surf kept getting bigger. "If we saw fear in their eyes they had to go in. Nothing personal. You gotta want it."
And those little girls stayed out there and rode wave after wave. The instructors pushed them in and they got up, rode it in and came back excited for more.
And I walked away from that story with two really fun things to think about.
The first was Josh's stoke for their stoke. He was so happy for their accomplishment, for their courage and for their joy. "They were taking these Waimea stances ... and just going for it."
And the other fun thing to ponder was how that experience may have changed those little girls' lives. And I am not saying they will grow up to be competitive surfers, they may never surf again ... but they got up on a wave and charged it ... don't you think that would change your sense of self ...
especially for a little girl ...
and that to me was cool.
