LavaCon 2010 Take Aways

Spent the last few days in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter live tweeting the LavaCon 2.0 Conference on Digital Media & Content Strategies.

"Every surface will have a message & every message will be social."

My LavaCon key take away and forecast for the immediate future:
3 bits of data are going to feed the next wave of information delivery.

1) The Karma Bit
2) The Reward Bit
3) The Location Bit

These three items will be critical going forward for everyone from software designers, content writers to the information consumer. Companys that plan for these advances now will florish.

The Karma Bit, or how to get your users to update and enrich your content for you. Any place that gives users more power and privilege when they take an active part.

The Reward Bit, think Foursquare or any other site that will give you a pretty badge for a task or accomplishment. Give your users many tiny rewards, .jpgs are cheap! They want their stinking badges.

The Location Bit, augmented reality being a recurring theme lately, but no talk about how to make the information you are generating ready for AR (augmented reality). Add a geo location bit and your data will be ready to integrate.

I would like to thank my friend DK for convincing me to go, see you all next year in HAWAII!!!!

"This is the issue of this election. Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American Revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far distant capitol can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves." What I Want SONGS, the NRC and Our Community to Hear

From 21st Century Disaster Tips You Will Not Hear From Officials.

My head is still spinning from the SONGS (San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station) and NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) public meeting last night in Dana Point. (Why not San Clemente?) Darin, Ella and I went to the SONGS and NRC meeting hoping to convince them to start a Twitter account for public safety and emergency notifications. Many people in our community do not work within earshot of a siren. They may work in Irvine, Costa Mesa, San Diego or LA. An emergency Twitter account would alert those with family in our immediate area. Twitter has proven to be a great asset in emergency situations and we have hoped that our public officials would implement some of the safety and notification services now available through free services such as Twitter. This video is a great example of how social media can help in disasters.

What I discovered is that the employees of the NUCLEAR REACTOR less than 6 miles from my home say that they can not speak freely about safety issues and concerns. One employee stated "We have no truth in our meetings at San Onofre." A former employee, just 8 days into retirement, sat front and center to voice his concerns as a member of the public. His knowledge of the plant and its internal operations frighten him. "It's bad right now that is why you are here." Rick said to the representatives from NRC.

It is rare for the NRC to send a "chilling effect letter" they sent one to SONGS because the amount of allegations made it necessary to do so. I had never heard of a "chilling effect letter," and discovered it " refers to a cold relationship between plant executives, supervisors and employees."

SONGS has ten times the number of safety allegations as the average nuclear plant in the US. Employees do not feel safe to voice their concerns over safety issues. That is not good.

The BP Oil Spill was a disaster waiting to happen. The employees knew it, but management turned its back on the signs and signals from the field. Now terms like "company culture" and "employee distrust" start to get very real.

San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station has begun a Twitter account. Their account is @SCE_SONGS for Southern California Edison -- San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

Blog World Expo BUZZ KILL

San Clemente Pier by 3D Camera for iPhone

Yesterday @LisaMcClure @MariaBrophy & I were sitting on the beach watching @DrewBrophy surf some killer set waves. The subject of @BlogWorldExpo came up. Maria decided to go based upon our recommendation but she also wanted to know why we would be going for our 4th year in a row?

Well, we had to be honest with her. We have no idea what to expect, what new trend we will notice, what old friend we will get to love up or what online friend we will finally get to meet in real life ... serendipity perhaps?

We sure as hell don't go for the gambling, and with Lisa fully pregnant we won't be doing much partying. I would like to try indoor skydiving if anyone is up for that? Why do we go to Blog World Expo?

I guess you could say we go to Blog World every year

and no birds ever sing excepting old crows...
